Neuropathy is a disorder that affects the peripheral nervous system (nerves outside the brain and spinal cord).  The nerves are damaged and can result in numbness, tingling, and/or pain in the extremities.  There are many causes of neuropathy including trauma to the nerves, tumors which can impinge on a nerve, malnutrition and lack of essential vitamins, and other diseases and disorders which can damage nerves.  The main cause of neuropathy, however, is diabetes which accounts for 30% of all neuropathy cases.

For some people the main symptom is pain in the form of a burning sensation in the affected extremities.  The hands and feet are most often affected, but whole limbs may feel the effects as well.  The pain often becomes worse at night making it difficult to sleep.  For other people suffering with neuropathy the danger is the numbness that accompanies it.  The lack of blood flow and nerve action in the affected area results in a lack of feeling.  When this happens, trauma to the affected area may not be felt.  A cut or blister can go unnoticed because of the numbness.  The lack of blood flow makes it difficult for the body to heal the wound, which can result in open sores and even gangrene.

Chiropractic can help treat neuropathy by relieving pain and restoring feeling.  The spine is the hub of the nervous system, and if there are misalignments in the spine it could be causing the neuropathy.  Misaligned vertebrae or discs that are herniated can be putting pressure on nerves that cause them to not function properly.  With a chiropractic adjustment, the spine is put back into proper alignment allowing for improved nervous system performance.  Chiropractic massage can also be incorporated into your treatment.  This stimulates blood flow to the affected areas which can improve feeling in the area and relieve pain.

You don’t have to live with the pain and discomfort caused by neuropathy.  Even if you have already tried traditional medicines and treatments without success, there is hope.  Schedule a consultation today so that we can develop a treatment plan for you.
